Lead Instructor

Marty CullenwardMarty Cullenward is the lead instructor for Foothill Shotokan. In 2006, he was awarded a fifth degree black belt by Sensei Tsutomu Ohshima. Fifth degree, known in the Japanese language as “godan”, is the highest level possible within SKA.

Marty’s extensive training in SKA has given him a thorough understanding of the style, it’s application and teaching. He joined SKA in 1973 as a student at Brigham Young University and continued his martial arts training without interruption as he built a career in print media. He has had the privilege of training directly under Sensei Ohshima and other senior members of SKA including Jim Sagawa, known throughout the organization for his expertise and leadership skills.

Marty continues to lead advanced training and has developed courses specifically designed for children and women. A resident of Cool, Calif., Marty often is called upon as guest instructor for other SKA dojos and helps organize regional as well as national SKA events. He has sponsored numerous jiyu kumite (free sparring) trainings and self-defense courses.
